Cemeteries are truly museums of people, each with thousands of incredible stories many of which are rarely if ever explored.
Sacha and Sheldon are two tour guides and LGBTQ+ historians, they have been working with Arnos Vale to explore the lives of 6 people buried in the cemetery who’s experiences will resonate with the queer community today.
The lives of the queerly departed are mostly unheard and unmentioned; buried deeply beneath forgotten headstones and lost among encroaching ivy. These were lives which didn’t conform to expectations of gender and sexuality: Secretive song writers, watercolour painters, suffragists, poets and more.
As part of a digital celebration of Bristol Pride join them for a virtual tour of the cemetery and an opportunity to celebrate stories that are so often obscured, hidden and even removed from history. This is a journey of burnt letters, secret hymns and coded nursery rhymes, all hidden amongst the headstones.
Sacha has been working in museums for over 10 years, he is a queer historian, folklorist and tour guide working on projects across the country with a particular passion for telling the tales of people often looked over in history. ( He is also an escape room designer and mermaid fanatic! )
‘Sheldon is a public historian and cemetery tour guide: for the past eight years he has been chronicling his research into long forgotten lives with blogs, videos and talks through the Cemetery Club. He is passionate about highlighting forgotten stories, particularly those to do with women and the queer dead.’
