Shop & Reception
As a working cemetery, steeped in history with a busy programme of events, we have a high footfall of visitors with many different reasons for visiting. The shop is a main point of contact for visitors. As a Shop Volunteer you’ll enjoy welcoming and talking to people and helping them find the perfect product to buy for themselves or a loved one. No experience is needed as full training is given
Role title: Shop Volunteer
When: Volunteer shifts are 10:30am-1pm or 1-4pm daily
Where: The gift shop in the East Lodge
How often: As often as you like. Once a week or once a fortnight is suggested
How long: We’d like you to stay with us for at least three months, but there’s no obligation
Supervised by: Shop Manager
What we need you to do
You’ll offer a warm welcome to visitors, providing information and answering questions. You’ll answer the phone, responding to queries or taking messages to pass on to staff. You’ll encourage an understanding of Arnos Vale and the importance of raising funds through the shop and donations. You’ll learn about the products we sell and share their stories with customers to support shop sales. You’ll operate the till and card machine, and help with processing new stock, sorting deliveries, pricing, and replenishing displays. You’ll maintain the good presentation of the shop by helping with dusting, tidying, sweeping, and vacuuming.
What we need from you
You’ll share our love of nature, conservation and history, and be willing to learn about all the gorgeous products sold in the shop. You’ll enjoy working with the public, and be able to respond appropriately to visitor enquiries, including from grieving relatives, dog-walkers, and tourists. You’ll be respectful to the cemetery and those remembered here.
You’ll be able to follow simple instructions and safety procedures, reporting any general maintenance issues and incidents, and maintain the organised storage of items. You’ll be willing to learn how to operate simple equipment and handle transactions and sales.

You’ll be part of a positive team of great people who all share a passion for the cemetery. You’ll gain valuable experience working in a gift shop & reception, strengthening your people skills. Once you’ve attended 12 sessions, we’ll be able to provide you with a reference. We’ll provide full training – no experience is necessary – covering working safely, working the card machine, and merchandising. You’ll have regular support and supervision from the Shop Manager. Discounts for volunteers are available in our café and gift shop and, from time to time, invitations to tours and events.
