Transcription
There are at least 300,000 people remembered here from our first burial in 1839 onwards. As a Volunteer Transcriber, you’ll transcribe our historic burial records onto a digital platform. This will transform the way people access information about family graves and provide an excellent historical resource for researchers, academics, and anyone passionate about history. No experience needed as full training is given.
Role title: Volunteer Transcriber
When: Flexible to suit you
Where: Home-based or from the offices at the cemetery on arrangement
How often: As often as you like. A couple of hours a week or fortnight is suggested
How long: We’d like you to stay with us for at least three months, but there’s no obligation
Supervised by: Public Engagement Manager
What we need you to do
You’ll need to read from digitally scanned historic records, deciphering names, dates and locations. Then accurately input burial information to the digital platform.
What we need from you
You’ll need to be computer literate, have an eye for detail and a good level of accuracy. You’ll need to be self-motivated. You’ll either need to have an internet connection and a suitable device (tablet or computer) at home, or you’ll need to arrange times in advance to use a desk and computer at the cemetery offices. You’ll need to follow simple instructions. Please be aware that reading about people’s death, especially young people, can affect mental health and we recommend that volunteers ensure this role is not negatively affecting them and to seek professional advice if needed.
What we offer you in return
You’ll have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to this special place by transforming the way people access our records. You’ll be immersed in history, discovering fascinating facts about people from the past, including Victorian Britain. You’ll gain valuable experience in reading old handwriting.
Training on reading old handwriting will be provided and top tips on names, dates and locations will be given to transcribers. All transcription will be checked and confirmed so you won’t be working in isolation. You’ll have regular support and supervision from the Public Engagement Manager. Once you’ve been in the role for three months, we’ll be able to provide you with a reference. You’ll be part of a wider team of great people who all share a passion for the cemetery. Discounts for volunteers are available in our café and gift shop and, from time to time, invitations to tours and events.
