Arnos Vale Cemetery invites the public to its annual Armistice Day Remembrance Event on Tuesday 11 November, held at the Great War Memorial in Soldiers’ Corner. The event will include readings from local organisations, prayers for the fallen read by the Reverend Pete Slee, and wreath laying by representatives of the Armed Forces

The ceremony begins at 10.50am, with a two-minute silence at 11am to honour those who gave their lives in service.

The Great War Memorial, near the Bath Road entrance of Arnos Vale Cemetery, was commissioned by the Bristol branch of the British Red Cross Society and unveiled on 21 October 1921 by Emily, Duchess of Beaufort. An estimated 2,000–3,000 people attended that original unveiling. This ceremony continues this century-old tradition of honouring those who gave their lives in conflict.

Soldiers’ Corner is the resting place of over 240 servicemen, part of the nearly 900 WWI casualties buried in cemeteries and graveyards across Bristol. This area of Arnos Vale contains the largest concentration of Great War dead in the city.

Ann Fiddler, CEO of Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust, said:
"Soldiers’ Corner is one of the most poignant parts of the cemetery. Each name honours those who served and the families they left behind. Our Remembrance ceremony provides the community with an opportunity to reflect on their service and the lasting impact of war on our city and its people”.

As part of Arnos Vale’s commitment to preserving these stories, the public is also invited to a special War Graves walking tour on Sunday 9 November at 2pm. This tour explores the personal histories of those buried in the cemetery, from underage conscripts to the war at home. Led by an expert guide and historian, the tour features original research and visits key graves and memorials linked to both World Wars.
