Gronow Davis was born on 16th May 1828 in Clifton, Bristol to parents John and Mary Davis. It is not known if he has siblings.
Military career and Honour
At 27 years old he was Captain in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, British Army of the Crimean War when he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
This extract is taken from The London Gazette 23rd June 1857.
“Date of act of bravery 08-09-1855.For great coolness and gallantry in the attack on Redan, 8th September 1855, on which occasion he commanded the spiking party and after which saved the life of Lieutenant Sanders, 30th Regiment by jumping over the parapet of a sap and proceeding twice some distance, across the open, under a “murderous” fire, to assist in conveying that officer, whose leg was broken, and who was otherwise severely wounded, under cover, and repeated this act in the conveyance of other wounded soldiers from the same exposed position.”
He finally achieved the rank of Major General. Gronow's Victoria Cross is displayed at the Royal Artillery Museum, Woolwich, England. The Victoria Cross is the highest and most prestigious award for bravery in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Home life
He married his wife Anna Willemina Mary Reade on 30th May 1866 and went on to have two children including Mary Gerladine Davis in 1869 who sadly passed away in 1870 only 10 months old and Gronow John Davis. His son Gronow born in 1869m=, went on to become Lieutenant Colonel in 22nd Punjabis, Indian Army.

Gronow passed away on 18th October 1891 Aged 63 as in buried in a family plot.
