Join Bristol Broomworks in the beautiful Anglican Chapel at Arnos Vale Cemetery for a four-hour workshop exploring the traditional craft of making short-handled hearth brooms.
Designed for those with some previous experience of tying handbrooms, the workshop will cover handle preparation, tying hurl onto a short handle, and stitching a broom. Participants will create their own fully functional hearth broom to take home.
Each participant can choose their handle, twine colour and a removable Yuletide adornment. These seasonal posies may include fresh evergreens, crystals, wooden ornaments, bells, star anise, cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices. The adornment can be removed after the festive season, allowing the broom to be decorated again for different seasons and occasions.
Tools are provided for use during the workshop and remain the property of Bristol Broomworks.
Please note
Broom making is a physical, hands-on craft carried out while seated. Participants should be prepared to use both hands, feet and core strength for sustained periods. Dexterity and strength in the hands, arms, legs and back are required. A cushion and apron may be useful.
Knives and lighters will be used during the workshop.
Participants should have previous experience with heritage-crafted, hand-tied brooms, such as from a previous handbroom-making class, as well as some experience handling and processing fibre.
Workshop feedback
“I thought it was a great half day, and the tutor made a real effort to thoroughly teach the basics. She couldn't have done better.”
