Cafe Volunteer
As a working cemetery, steeped in history with a busy programme of events, we welcome a wide range of visitors every day. The café is an important part of the visitor experience, offering a friendly space for people to relax, meet friends, and enjoy refreshments. As a Café Volunteer, you'll enjoy welcoming people, providing excellent customer service, and helping to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. No experience is needed as full training is provided.
When: Volunteer shifts are 11:00 – 15:00
Where: The Café
How often: As often as you like. Once a week or once a fortnight is suggested.
How long: We'd like you to stay with us for at least three months, but there's no obligation
Supervised by: Café Manager or Café Team Lead
What we need you to do
You'll offer a warm welcome to visitors, helping to create a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone who visits the café. You'll assist with serving food and drinks, clearing tables, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment.
You'll answer basic visitor enquiries or direct questions to the appropriate member of staff. You'll help promote an understanding of Arnos Vale and the importance of supporting the charity through purchases, donations, and café sales.
You'll assist with replenishing stock, restocking displays, washing up, and keeping service areas tidy and organised. You'll help maintain high standards of cleanliness by wiping tables, sweeping floors, and supporting general housekeeping throughout the café.
What we need from you
You'll share our love of nature, conservation, and history, and enjoy meeting and talking to a diverse range of people. You'll be friendly, approachable, and able to respond appropriately to visitor enquiries.
You'll be respectful of the cemetery and those remembered here. You'll be able to follow simple instructions, food hygiene requirements, and safety procedures, reporting any maintenance issues, hazards, or incidents to staff.
You'll be willing to learn new skills, work as part of a team, and help create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

You'll develop customer service, communication, teamwork, and hospitality skills. Once you've attended 12 sessions, we'll be able to provide you with a reference.
We'll provide full training – no experience is necessary – covering customer service, food hygiene, health and safety, and café procedures. You'll receive regular support and supervision from the Café Manager and Team Lead.
Discounts for volunteers are available in our café and gift shop and, from time to time, invitations to tours and events.
