Our Landscape Management Volunteers help us look after the cemetery as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. They help to conserve the existing grassland and woodland habitats and improve their quality for the benefit of wildlife. They also help us keep the cemetery neat and tidy, providing safe access for visitors to the graves and listed monuments. No experience is needed and gloves and tools are provided.

We're not currently taking new volunteers. Please check back again.

What we need you to do

You’re likely to be using hand tools to cut back vegetation covering graves, to tidy and maintain paths, and to keep our various habitats healthy. Over summer, you might be cutting grass with strimmers and mowers, or raking and removing the cuttings. You could also be involved in splitting, filling, and moving bags of logs to be sold in our shop. You'll generally keep the cemetery neat and tidy for events, weddings, and funerals.

What we need from you

You’ll work as part of a team, following simple instructions and safety procedures. You’ll be respectful to the cemetery and those remembered here, and be able to respond appropriately to visitor enquiries, including from grieving relatives, dog-walkers, and tourists. You’ll need to wear sturdy footwear and clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty. This is a manual role, so you’ll need to be physically mobile and able to negotiate uneven ground, sometimes in poor weather.

What we offer you in return

You’ll have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to this special place and learn about the wildlife and history here. You’ll be part of a positive team of great people who all share a passion for the cemetery. You’ll also gain valuable experience working in a recognised Site of Nature Conservation Interest and Registered Park and Garden. We’ll provide full training – no experience is necessary – and a health & safety induction. You’ll have regular support and supervision from the Estates Team. Once you’ve attended 12 sessions, we’ll be able to provide you with a reference. Discounts for volunteers are available in our café and gift shop and, from time to time, invitations to tours and events.
