Research

Arnos Vale is full of history. We discover the heritage of Bristol by researching the stories of people who helped it develop and grow. Some were famous in their lifetimes, but most were ordinary people who helped to create the city that we love today. As a Research Volunteer, you’ll help uncover these stories and bring them to life so that they can be shared with others. No experience is needed as full training is given.

Role title:                   Research Volunteer

When:                          Flexible

Where:                        Home-based or from the cemetery offices on arrangement

How often:                As often as you like. A couple of hours a week or fortnight is suggested

How long:                  We’d like you to stay with us for at least three months, but there’s no obligation

Supervised by:        Public Engagement Manager

What we need you to do

You’ll use the internet and available documents to research people who are remembered here. It will involve reading old records and researching leads as they’re discovered. You’ll create profiles for people, documenting their stories.

What we need from you

You’ll need to be computer literate and have good attention to detail, taking care to be accurate. You’ll be patient, self-motivated and adaptable. You’ll either need to have an internet connection and a suitable device (tablet or computer) at home, or you’ll need to arrange times in advance to use a desk and computer at the cemetery offices. You’ll be able to follow simple instructions. Although research skills and ability to read old handwriting is an advantage in the role, they’re not necessary because full training will be given.

What we offer you in return

You’ll have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to this special place by sharing our stories, and you’ll learn about the history here. You’ll gain valuable experience in research and cemetery history. You’ll be part of a wider team of great people who all share a passion for the cemetery. We’ll provide full training – no experience is necessary. You’ll have regular support and supervision from the Public Engagement Manager. Once you’ve been in the role for three months, we’ll be able to provide you with a reference. Discounts for volunteers are available in our café and gift shop and, from time to time, invitations to tours and events.
